Schooling for disadvantaged children

Since May 2009, NGO JADE (Jeunes Actifs pour le Développement) has run an annual project, as part of its "Fighting Poverty" programme and with the support of private German donors, to help disadvantaged primary school children in rural areas attend school.

The four supported schools are all located in the Toamasina region, but face very different local realities. Ambodisaina, less than 5 km from Toamasina, relies on farming and livestock (average income around 108,000 Ariary/month). Fanara, 35 km north on the RN5, relies on farming, fishing and crafts (around 60,000 Ariary/month). Ambodimanga II, over 100 km north near Fénérive-Est, in a remote and hard-to-reach area, relies on subsistence crops such as rice and vanilla (around 60,000 Ariary/month). And Andranokobaka, the most isolated site of the project, relies on subsistence farming with an average income of only 40,000 Ariary/month. Schooling rates vary sharply, from 45% in Andranokobaka to around 90% in Fanara and Ambodimanga II, illustrating the scale of educational inequality in rural Madagascar.

School supplies needed for the new school year

To prepare the next distribution, NGO JADE has precisely assessed the supplies needed for its 60 sponsored students, broken down as follows:

To gather these supplies, NGO JADE is running a school-supplies donation drive throughout September (notebooks, pens, rulers, school bags, and other school supplies): donations can be dropped off at NGO JADE's head office in Mangarano (Toamasina), Monday to Friday from 8am to noon.
