World Environment Day - June 5, 2023

In Madagascar, the reality of environmental degradation is reflected in the destruction of ecosystems, marked by excessive deforestation, soil degradation, and other harmful consequences. Residents meet their daily needs by significantly damaging the ecosystem, often without regard for long-term consequences. Beyond this destruction, the uncontrolled spread of plastic waste in their living space worsens the situation. To promote awareness of nature preservation, a World Environment Day was organized on June 5, 2023, aiming to raise public awareness and combat the illegal dumping of plastic waste.

The main goal of this initiative is to raise awareness among the population of Tamatave about the responsible management of their plastic waste. By focusing on awareness-raising, the event aims to encourage environmentally friendly practices and promote a greater understanding of the consequences of plastic pollution.

The day began with an eco-gesture carnival at 8 am in front of Saint Paul Mangarivotra church, bringing together all participants. At 10 am, activities moved to the front of Toamasina's town hall, where an opening conference took place with the participation of state representatives, including the mayor and various ministers. The day also included key moments such as conferences on waste management, led by experts like Mr. Roland ALBIGNAC, agronomist and ecologist, as well as in-depth discussions on the threats posed by plastic waste and innovative solutions. The active participation of steering committee members, the carnival, and booths, including those of NGO Jade, contributed to the success of this day dedicated to environmental preservation.
