Ocean Initiatives 2024 - Vatomandry

The beach cleanup in Vatomandry, organized by NGO JADE in partnership with Surfrider Foundation Europe, addresses a growing environmental emergency on Madagascar's east coast. Faced with the buildup of plastic waste, a major source of pollution and disease, this initiative aims to raise awareness among the local population, particularly students and fishermen, through concrete waste-collection and environmental education actions. Since 2009, JADE has been running an increasing number of campaigns of this kind. In June 2024, more than 120 participants cleaned 400 meters of beach and took part in educational workshops. This pilot project demonstrates the positive impact of community engagement for environmental protection.
